About Me

Mellissa Willette BSN, RN, IBCLC

I have been an RN in Obstetrical Health for over 20 years.  I knew I wanted to be in Women’s health before graduating.  My life and career have taken a path I didn’t expect. I worked in an area where almost everyone had an epidural, and I did not want one when I had my first child.  I didn’t have the support I needed, and with the 2nd I learned the value of education and support. WOW, it was amazing.  Teaching became a passion for me.  I realized how much power I could help women obtain over their own birth. Epidural or no epidural, the power of childbirth education to help you make the choices that are right for you. Its about birthing YOUR way.

Breastfeeding has been a huge passion for me.  I love helping the journey of parents to succeed.  Sometimes a little help is all you need.

In the past few years, I discovered the importance of New moms/parent groups.  We are so isolated as new parents.  Facebook and Instagram give us a perfect view that is not reality.  Moms in this kind of group blossom it is amazing.

Helping parents succeed has been my greatest honor. Comments like these humble me and make me so thankful to be part of these families’ lives. Please see more reviews on Facebook.

Happy Clients

I worked with Mellissa while pregnant & postpartum and she is a fantastic educator. She made herself available when I needed her and her special touch empowered me to keep pressing on to overcome breastfeeding issues. She is knowledgeable, professional, and at the same time has a great sense of humor that puts you at ease and helps you hang on to all the valuable pieces of information she gives you. I’d highly recommend any classes she has to offer.

L.B.

Mellissa naturally provides such a nonjudgmental environment for both mama and dad! Any questions are welcomed and her answers were always personalized for your parenting style (bc we aren't all the same type of parent!! Which is perfectly acceptable to Mellissa!!) and fully backed with strong educational and statistical reference. I truly owe her for a such a wonderful labor (long + painful ...but I was prepared!) and for making the first 3 months of being a new mom stress free and joyful because I got to see her in "class" once a week with other new moms! I met my goal of breastfeeding and I credit her guidance and support (without the pressure!) for this! If you want to enjoy your mom experience through the tiring times...then Mellissa is your lady! She brings the joy!

Melissa educated and supported me and my husband throughout my pregnancy as well as postpartum. I never felt nervous about labor/delivery because Melissa had prepared us so well for what was going to happen. My child didn’t take to breastfeeding right away and I began to worry that she never would. Melissa was a calming and steady presence. She was available to answer all my questions/worries and continued to encourage me through my breastfeeding struggles. Because of her, my child caught on after some practice and made me feel more confident and trusting of my maternal instincts.

Won't my provider and nurses tell me all I need to know?

Yes and no.  You will get lots of information from them. Most information on caring for your baby and breastfeeding will happen 24-48 hours after birth.  You will be tired and have company and be full of lovely hormones that don’t help you remember.  As little as 20% of information is retained at that time.

Can I have a natural delivery at the hospital?

Well, yes absolutely. Our classes cover hospitals and how to help empower you to understand your decisions. .  Tips and tricks for every setting.

I want an epidural. Why should I take a class?

Well honestly, you have to get to the point you can get your epidural. Would you like to do that with control and minimal anxiety?  You can also learn about hospital interventions and what they are and do.  This is not a don't you dare get an epidural class. This is you do what you want, and I am going to help you achieve your goals. These classes also discuss what happens to your body after delivery and how to make that better.

Isn't Breastfeeding natural?

Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed your baby. It is a lost art in our culture that we are just starting to reclaim. That does not mean there is not a lot of misinformation out there.  Get good evidence-based information!! Studies show us that those who take a class prenatally have greater success with breastfeeding. The breastfeeding class helps your partner help you too.  Teamwork!

I breastfeed my first baby, but it didn't go well, will a class help?

Yes, Yes And YES!!  Knowing beforehand expectations and tips and tricks can increase your chances of success.  Having your partner in class to help support you and learn with you will make you a great team.  You will also be better able to find good resources after the baby comes if you need help.

Won't the nurses help me with natural labor?

They will if they can AND have the time and skill to do so.  Nurses are not trained specifically to assist through natural labor.  They may have a sicker patient down the hall.  They may be busy.  Even as a nurse, I would love to stay at my patient’s bedside and help them through contractions but I can’t I don't have the time to do that.

Should I get a doula?

I love the doulas in our community; there are so many wonderful ones.  They are a great incorporation to your labor team.  Taking a class will help make it even more successful. Even if you have a doula class will help. I can also help you find a doula.
